Chapter 11

We set out early the next morning with our nerves rattling and our anxiety high. There was no avoiding it. The situation we were about to walk into was one none of us could have ever expected, not those of us who’d been randomly transported here only a few weeks prior, nor those of us who’d been here their entire lives.

A very, very long life in Tevai’s case.

The Outlands had been the boogeyman in all of Kryze’s bedtime stories, and so far, the only information we’d been given about the strange place was the stuff of nightmares.

So, I was a little unsteady on my horse as we began moving away from Woodhouse while the sun was still bright overhead. We had a long journey ahead of the four of us.

Kryze was alone atop Gol, with Tevai on Mr. Clip Clop behind me and Gwen very bravely riding Peanut alone.

I was proud of the willowy brunette for mostly getting over her fear of horses, which was more than I could say about Tevai and her distinct disdain for riding the creatures. But beggars couldn’t be choosers, and so long as we all made it through the mountains and into Shanukstan in one piece, that was good enough for me.

The dragon-woman held my waist lightly, which was a relief compared to Olivia the day before. I was actually able to breathe as we set out at an even trotting pace toward the range of mountains looming at the tip of the valley ahead of us.

“Are you sure you know where we’re going?” I called over to Kryze, just to make sure everything was in order.

I didn’t have any doubts that the priestess knew what she was talking about, but it was always good to check in, especially when it might serve to soothe some of the worry in my own chest.

“Yes,” Kryze said with a nod of her head.

Her hair was kept back from her face with a blue shawl, and only two thick strands hung free with metal cuffs on each of them on each side. It was similar to the way she’d worn her hair when we’d first met her, and already, that felt like an entire lifetime ago.

She was dressed in a brightly colored tunic with detailed embroidery all over it, leather shoulder pads lined with fur, and trousers made of a dark material that clung to her lower body like a second skin.

She had a bow slung across her back as well, and even though I’d never seen her fire the weapon, it looked like it belonged there.

Gwen also wore a bow across her back, but unlike Kryze, I knew the brunette could shoot and shoot well.

She wasn’t dressed in one of the handmade outfits we’d worn into Lydmark, but instead had borrowed some of Kryze’s clothing to try and better fit in once we crossed the border into Shanukstan.

They were a little small on Gwen, who had a good head of height over the other woman,
